My Parents’ Favorite Snack
I am just beginning to make friends with my parents’ favorite fruit, Alligator Pears. Here is the thing. There are numerous ways to get proper nutrition. But I am discovering that avocados are one of the most nutritious fruits. Alligator pears can energize our lives in many ways. Come along with me as I overcome adversity to this healthy but very mushy fruit.
Daddy
“Nise, go back and get me and ya’ Mama two alligator pears. And bring the salt and pepper, too.” My dad would sometimes tell me.
Yuck. I asked my parents, “How can y’all eat those things like that? They are so mushy!”
Lord, If Mama and Daddy Could See Me Now
1. Eat Them When You’re Depressed
Honey, I had empty-nest syndrome, pre-menopausal, active menopausal, post-menopausal, and 100-year pandemic blues all come at me one-by-one over the past few years. Now, come to find out, avocados could have helped me with that! What is this thing, a mushy miracle on steroids?
To be clear, I am not saying avocados will cure all of life’s issues. But it sounds like they could help us combat some of life’s common ailment
2. For Pandemic Pounds
Furthermore, if the nutritional information isn’t enough, what I just read has certainly captured my attention. You see, I’ve got some pandemic pounds to lose, and these people tell me that alligator pears can help me do that.
Okay. Keep talking. I am listening.
I have even turned off my music to read about this benefit because I need to concentrate on this article right here!

Now, back to the article!
3. When You Need More Omega-3’s
Some might think, “Dang Denise, have you been living under a rock?” I haven’t been under a rock, at least not about health-related things. Yet, as health-minded as I have tried to be, I always skipped over any information about avocados. I mean, I had it out for those things.
Listen to this. The brain responds well to a body loaded with good fats that every cell in our body craves and needs, and nutritionists say Omega-3s are good fat.
I’ve Got Some Issues
I got a bad left knee, chronically dry skin, aging eyes, an increasing waistline, and thinning hair. Subsequently, I now have enough information to convince me that the alligator pear should be my new best friend forever!
4. The Omega-3 Bandwagon
We all get inundated with commercials and health articles about the benefits of Omega-3 vitamins. Even as I write this article, I will bet anything short of my children that I have at least two bottles of Omega-3 vitamins in my kitchen cupboard. Yet, I haven’t remembered to take the tablets for at least a couple of years!
In Sight In Mind
Therefore, another argument for introducing avocados into my daily diet would be that I would see them on my kitchen table opposed to having them stuck in a cupboard and forgotten about. That would help me to remember to eat them before they go bad. Problem solved.
In the past, I have let a few avocados rot, but now I am armed with all this nutritional information, And I mean business this time! Besides, I am not buying another bottle of omega-3 tablets! LOL!
5. Avocados Are Good For Your Hair
I have been dealing with episodes of hair breakage and thinning for the past five years, beginning when I got the shingles that caused blisters on my scalp. All this damn stress has been taking my hair out, so I often bought avocado oil to mix with olive oil and essential oils for scalp massages.
I Ain’t Buying No More Oil
However, after reading these articles, I would no longer need to buy the oil if I started eating avocados regularly. Listen, Whole Foods Market already gets too much dang-on money from me, so avocado oil is one less thing I will need to buy there, and that is fine with me! I can be a silly girl at times.
6. Try Them For Your Achy Joints
The fact that avocado helps with Arthritis strikes a particular nerve with me because it runs in females on the maternal side of my family. My older sister, niece, and daughter were diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 10. Plus, my family has other auto-immune diseases that affect the joints.
When You Don’t Know
Besides, I am nursing a little guilt while reading this. If I had known this, I would have embraced alligator pears when my daughter was young to help relieve her symptoms. I did, however, decide to take her off the many prescribed medications, to the chagrin of her Pediatric Rheumatologist. Still, being as conscientious about my children’s diet as I was, I would have added avocado to my regular shopping list.
7. Increase Your Vitamin C Intake
As a young woman, those Sunkist commercials convinced me I needed a lot of Vitamin C in my diet. As a result, I drank so much orange juice that it caused a rash on my skin that sent me to the dermatology department at the Tulane University Medical center.
Prescriptions
I remember how my dad shook his head when I walked into the house with two 1/2 gallons of a liquid concoction the dermatologist prescribed for me. It’s comical now that I think about it all these years later. But in my research, I am also learning that alligator pears are a great source of Vitamin-C. Say what!? Who would have thunk that in even a million years!?!
8. Increase Your Potassium
I eat at least two bananas per day, every day. Today, I read that avocados have more potassium than bananas! Seriously? Why am I just finding these things out? Somebody must be making that up. Because, surely that can’t be right, huh?
Did Mama and Daddy know?
I don’t ever remember my parents saying anything about the nutritional benefits of avocados. They were hooked on the taste and would only say, “These things are good for you, Nise.”
My Curried Avocado Brunch
I am trying, y’all. Here is a photo of one of my Avocado brunches. It is curried chickpeas, zucchini, onions, spinach, potatoes, and smoked turkey sausage. I will put sliced Alligator Pear on top of all of that! See! I told y’all that I mean business! LOL!
9. Improve Your Eye Health!
No matter one’s age, good eye health is a must, and many of us can tell that our eyesight has changed gradually over the years. Alligator pears contain an anti-oxidant called lutein, which is supposed to be a great supplement that helps with eye issues. I can hardly believe the many benefits of regularly implementing avocados into our diet.
10. Improve Your Bone Health
Vitamin K is one essential vitamin that I rarely think of, but supposedly, it helps bone health. So, avocados give us at least 25% of the Vitamin K experts recommend. Did you know that? One of the main concerns as we age is Osteoporosis, so I need to pay attention to this. And many of us know a senior citizen who has fallen and broken a hip, so we should keep this in mind.
K likes D
In addition, I learned that vitamin K works with vitamin D to keep our bones strong. Wow, this is a lot! I am impressed at all the blessings that could be ours just by making avocados part of our regular meal plan.
To clarify, I still cannot eat avocados as a snack, like my parents did, but I try to eat at least half an avocado on most days. I am coming up with more ways to get the good stuff in.
Everything You Need To Know
Lastly, information is more readily available today than it was 25 years ago. If I didn’t know any better, I would think one could get a medical degree by absorbing the vast amount of information available on the internet. The one caveat is that we need to double-check the information with medical professionals and nutritionists or at least fact-check it against several reliable online sources.
Finally, I am not saying that avocados are a cure-all. Nothing is. Still, in the fight for better health and wellness, we must employ as many allies as possible.
